"Read Across America" @ SMS

"You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book."
-Dr. Seuss-

There has been quite the mantra at St. Matthias School during this 2018 and 2019 school year and that has been to Read… Read…Read… and then Read some more.  And, the school family at SMS has been doing just that. The staff members who instruct the students in the areas of English Language Arts have been actively involved in an intense program of research, study and implementation of the best practices for students to be lifelong, productive readers and writers.

And, so this past week, we celebrated Reading, we joined with schools across our great nation to celebrate Read Across America. On March 1, the students engaged in a number of activities to celebrate the habits they have cultivated to be competent writers and readers. Middle school students partnered with their Buddy grades to celebrate the day.

Sixth grade students focused on the book, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.  Using STEM type activities after reading the book, students worked on their Math skills by graphing goldfish and playing goldfish themed go fish. Students in grade 7 after reading Green Eggs and Ham assisted third grade students in balancing plastic green eggs on a spoon. Once the students got at least 7 eggs across the finish line, they had to decode as many words as possible that are listed on the egg. Eighth grade students after reading Cat in the Hat with fourth grade used their STEM skills to see which group can make the highest tower using cups, index cards and other heavy paper.

Principal, Eileen Brett, read The Sneetches to students in grades 5 and 7 during their library period and took a look between the lines of the author’s text to draw out deeper meaning from the text. The message the students were able to determine from the text were profound. Their inferencing skills were sharp.

All students and staff members enjoyed some DEAR time as they Dropped Everything and Read at 2PM. The atmosphere in the school was whisper quiet as everyone took some delightful time to read silently a text of their choice.

On Thursday of Read Across America week under the direction of ELA teacher, Debra de Leon brought a skype experience to the students of the Middle School.  Students were able to visit and dialogue with renowned author Erin Dionne. At the end of our skyping visit, Erin told the students that she would be sending her latest book to us for some editing. How exciting.

So, READING ROCKS at St. Matthias School. What a great place where students learn and celebrate with one another.
