Retrieving Student Belongings from the School - We were just informed that sometime during the week of June 1st, teachers will begin entering the school to pack up student belongings into brown bags. Parents will be given a pick-up date during the week of June 8th in which they can pick up their child's belongings from an outdoor location. You will also need to RETURN things that belong to the school such as textbooks, library books, classroom library books, etc. More information about this will be coming from Ms. Brett in the Wednesday Envelope.  This is what I need to know from you:  Do you WANT any of your child's belongings? We are talking about books, clothing, schoolwork, folders, trinkets, and so forth. Everything! I realize that some parents will not want anything because of the virus, whereas some parents will want whatever belongs to their child. It will be an ALL or NOTHING situation. I can either give you everything in a bag, or no bag at all. You only need to email me if you don't want anything. Again, I need an email. In that situation, I will take whatever belongs to your child and throw it in the garbage. I hope I am being clear on this.

No School - There is no school for the students this Friday, May 15th! There is only school for the teachers. Thank you.

Kindness Day - We will be celebrating Kindness Day next week. I will post more info on that shortly. Definitely get your Kindness Day or Yellow t-shirts ready.

Family Field Day - Stay tuned for more info regarding Field Day in June.

EPIC Reading Program - Hello, parents. For those of you who asked for access to the EPIC program, I have since set up my account. You should be receiving an email from EPIC. Once you open it, it will ask you to set up your parent/child account. You should then be good to go. It is my understanding that there is no "class code"... that you must "log in as a parent."  If a child logs in as a student, then they are required to use a class code, and we were instructed not to use those.  I have included a link below with the directions for doing so. After viewing the link, if you still can't get in, please let me know. If you did not have me add your name to EPIC, please know that I can still do so. Anytime you wish to be added, just send me an email. This invitation is for 4A and 4B students.

Poetry Notebooks - Parents, please check that your child has some type of Poetry Notebook and that poetry assignments are being created in it. Students may even write their own poetry within it and not just items assigned by me. Sometime soon, I will be asking students to submit one or two of their original poems to me. If they are maintaining a poetry notebook, it will be easy for them to fulfill that request. It is my hope that students use and cherish their poetry journals.

UPDATE!  STAR Assessments - Students will be taking the fourth quarter STAR assessment later this week. Here is the information from our librarian, Mrs. Lanzalotto:

    Dear Parents,

Greetings to you and your families with hope that you are well and safe.
In accordance with our implementation of the Accelerated Reader Program at
SMS, we will begin the process this week of administering the last of three yearly
STAR Reading Assessments to all students in grades 1-8. This comprehensive
assessment provides all the insights needed to guide literacy growth for readers
at all levels of achievement. Children arrive at school with different
backgrounds, different needs, and different learning styles—but they all need
    to become strong readers.

STAR Assessments provide teachers with learning data. They are computer
adaptive, which means they adjust to each answer your child provides. This
helps teachers get the best data to help guide students to become proficient
readers with a research-based, empirically supported learning progression. It
identifies the continuum of reading strategies and skills needed for students to
reach grade-level proficiency and achieve mastery.

Usually, the STAR Assessment is only conducted at school, but due to these
unusual circumstances, that practice is temporarily changed so that students can
move forward with their reading skills and broaden the range in which they
    practice reading.

All SMS students are familiar with the Assessment. Your child’s teacher will
assign it some time with in the next week. Students are not expected to be
able to answer all questions. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE YOUR CHILD
ANSWERS OR GIVE THEM WORDS THAT THEY DON’T RECOGNIZE. If
you do that, you will destroy the integrity of the assessment and skew the
results. Please just tell them to do their best that they cannot fail a STAR
Assessment. The best way to help your child with Star Assessments is to help
them understand why they are taking the test: so their teacher knows exactly
    how to help them learn!

Please also be aware that each test result will be reviewed individually. If the
result is not consistent with the student’s record of accomplishment, they will be
    required to re-take the assessment.

Thanks and stay tuned for the assignment from your child’s teacher.

    Warmly,
    Mrs. Lanzalotto
