    Silver Award Service Project

Congratulations!  Class of 2016 graduates Carolyn F., Krista C. and Alexia F. of Girl Scout Troop 61307.  Girl Scout Council has awarded them with a Silver Award for their accomplishments.  The highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn.  For their Silver Award project, the girls at the end of last school year came to a faculty meeting and to individual classrooms to help promote no longer using the word "retarded" in daily language in a negative way.   We are all very proud of them and want to thank the St. Matthias community for helping them achieve this goal.  They should be so proud of their hard work and accomplishments!

    Eagle Scout Service Project

Brendan M., Class of 2014 and a Life Scout in Troop 113 in Somerset wanted to bring back the US map and upgrade the meditation garden. Part of his Eagle Service project was to paint a playground map at St. Matthias School this summer. The Telephone Pioneers and local organizations provided donations to help purchase paint, mulch and materials. His friends, family and troop labored alongside Brendan throughout the summer completing the two projects in early September. Brendan dropped by school one afternoon to explain his projects. He was happy to see the map and garden enjoyed by students of all ages.

Arien Y. and the Graduating Class of 2016

Last year, when Arien Y. heard the news of the flooding in his family's village in Chenni, India, Arien knew he had to do something.  He asked his classmates in 8A and 8B to pray for his relatives and neighbors. Not only did they pray but they collected their change from lunch each day. They had responded out of care and compassion. Arien and his parents converted the dollars to 11,000.00 rupees and delivered the money to the Nehru Government High School. The principal said the money would be used for the poor children's snacks. This experience has inspired Arien to continue to help that school.
