    St. Matthias School

     

    Why SMS?

    Families experience a safe and structured environment that has the highest standards of academic excellence in the Catholic tradition.

     

    How do I apply to SMS?

    Applications can be picked up in the school office or downloaded from the school website.

     

    Do you have a payment plan?

    We have two methods of tuition payment.

    *Payment in full made directly to St. Matthias School by May 31, 2018.

    *Monthly payments made through FACTS Management Co. Paperwork for this is provided at registration.

     

    Is there financial aid?

    Families may apply for tuition assistance through the Diocese of Metuchen.  Applications for this are available online beginning January 31, 2018 at https://online.factsmgt.com/aid . All documentation must be submitted to FACTS by March 31, 2018.

     

    What is the Tuition Angels Fund?

    This fund responds to emergency situations; offering assistance to current school families based on the individual family’s need. All inquiries should be directed to the school principal.

     

    What is the Home School Association (HSA) commitment?

    Each family is required to make a fundraising commitment of $500 through the Home School Association (HSA). This is considered a part of tuition and must be paid by all families regardless of which rate of tuition they pay. In addition, each family is requested to volunteer 2 hours to HSA events or service and another 2 hours to the Parish Carnival held in May.

     

    Do you provide transportation?

         Residents of Franklin Township (Only K-8 grades)

    Transportation is provided through Franklin Township. Decisions on bus stops and busing routes are strictly those of Franklin Township. A bus may be provided to those students living at least 2 miles from St. Matthias School. Some residents of Franklin Township may receive payment in lieu of transportation.

         Residents of Other School Districts (Only K-8 grades)

    Students residing in a school district other than Franklin Township may receive payment in lieu of transportation provided you live less than 20 miles from St. Matthias School.  This includes: Bridgewater, New Brunswick, North Brunswick, South Brunswick, South River, East Brunswick, Hillsborough, Middlesex, Milltown, Piscataway, Edison, and Highland Park.  Students residing in Bound Brook, South Bound Brook, Manville or Somerville do not receive transportation or payment in lieu of transportation.

     

    What are your school hours?

    Grades Pre-K through 8 begin at 8:00 am and end at 2:30 pm. 

     

    What is your maximum class size?

    For grades K through 8, the maximum class size is 30 students.  The Pre-K maximum student to adult ratio is 11:1 .

     

    Do students need to be toilet trained for PreK?

    Yes, students need to be fully toilet trained and ready for a learning environment.

     

    What is your age cutoff date?

    PreK students must be 4 by October 31, and Kindergarten students must be 5 by October 31.

     

    Do you have classroom assistants?

    Yes, our PreK and Kindergarten classrooms have both a certified teacher and an assistant. In addition, for students in Kindergarten through grade 8 there is a resource teacher available to assist in the classroom or to work with students in small group settings. SMS also provides a full-time school counselor and a licensed nurse. Teachers for speech, additional class instruction, in-class support and child study services are provided through the Educational Services Commission of New Jersey.

     

    What is PowerSchool?

    PowerSchool is an online grade book where you can monitor your child’s academic growth and attendance record throughout the quarter.  With PowerSchool there is no need to wait for interims or report cards to see how your child is progressing.

     

    Is technology available in your classrooms?

    Technology is always evolving and the school strives to maintain a "state of the art" program.  Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 participate in a 1:1 program, integrating technology across the curriculum with the use of chromebooks.  Sets of iPads are available to younger students for centers, cooperative group work and independent work.  Every one of our classrooms, Pre-School through 8th grade, is equipped with an Interactive Whiteboard.  This computer-based tool allows for inventive and engaging lessons which incorporate internet options and streaming videos to better educate and prepare students for learning in our computer-based society. The students of Saint Matthias School have access to and explore the internet for academic research. Each student has his/her own computer in the Media Center lab and works on computer assisted instruction, logical thinking, and application software.

     

    What academic specials do you provide?

    SMS offers Spanish, Music, Art and Library for grades PreK through 8. Computers and Physical Education is offered for grades K through 8.

     

    What leadership or service opportunities are available?

    There are several leadership and service programs at SMS such as Altar Servers (5-8), Student Council (5-8), Peer Mediators (4), Tech Team (6-8), Buddy Program (1-8), and Safety Patrol (7-8).

     

    Do you have an after school and before school program?

    Yes, the school provides a supervised After School Program (ASP) for students in grades PreK through 8.  The ASP program is available for all students until 6pm.  We also offer a supervised Before School Program (BSP).  BSP is available beginning at 6:45am for students in PreK-8.

     

    What school and after school activities do you offer?

    St. Matthias offers a wide variety of programs.  Among them are after Odyssey of the Mind (3-8), school sports (3-8), band (4-8), basketball (3-8), cross country (3-8), cheerleading (1-8), baseball (7-8), softball (6-8), children’s choir (3-8), drama club (6-8), gardening club (3-8), Model UN (8), prayer group (3-8), forensics (5-8), computer coding (4-8), yearbook (7-8), and Young Authors (3-8).  In addition many Scout troop meetings are held at SMS.
