    Dear Parents,

Greetings to you and your families with hope that you are well and safe.

In accordance with our implementation of the Accelerated Reader Program at SMS, we will begin the process this week of administering the last of three yearly STAR Reading Assessments to all students in grades 1-8. This comprehensive assessment provides all the insights needed to guide literacy growth for readers at all levels of achievement. Children arrive at school with different backgrounds, different needs, and different learning styles—but they all need to become strong readers.

STAR Assessments provide teachers with learning data. They are computer adaptive, which means they adjust to each answer your child provides. This helps teachers get the best data to help guide students to become proficient readers with a research-based, empirically supported learning progression. It identifies the continuum of reading strategies and skills needed for students to reach grade-level proficiency and achieve mastery.

Usually, the STAR Assessment is only conducted at school, but due to these unusual circumstances, that practice is temporarily changed so that students can move forward with their reading skills and broaden the range in which they practice reading.

All SMS students are familiar with the Assessment. Your child’s teacher will assign it some time with in the next week. Students are not expected to be able to answer all questions. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE YOUR CHILD ANSWERS OR GIVE THEM WORDS THAT THEY DON’T RECOGNIZE. If you do that, you will destroy the integrity of the assessment and skew the results. Please just tell them to do their best that they cannot fail a STAR Assessment. The best way to help your child with Star Assessments is to help them understand why they are taking the test: so their teacher knows exactly how to help them learn!

Please also be aware that each test result will be reviewed individually. If the result is not consistent with the student’s record of accomplishment, they will be required to re-take the assessment.

Thanks and stay tuned for the assignment from your child’s teacher.
