How is the Annual Fund different from the Home School Association fundraising?
HSA fundraising enables the community to support Catholic education by making purchases of candy, gift-wrap or scrip through school families. Other HSA fundraisers include events such as the Craft Fair. These all provide goods or services for their expense. The Annual Fund will allow Saint Matthias School to receive funds directly from the donor. The donor does not receive goods or services. There are no overhead costs to the Annual Fund. The tax benefits of giving to the St. Matthias Annual Fund make it an attractive way to support Catholic education. The Home School Association is comprised of current SMS school families, administration and faculty. The Annual Fund will reach current school families, as well as, alumni, alumni parents, friends, and corporations.

Why do we have both the Annual Fund and HSA fundraising?
The Annual Fund is a complement to HSA fundraising. A great deal of effort goes into the amount of money the HSA contributes to the school budget. The HSA currently provides $150,000 toward the budget. The HSA contribution accounts for 6% of the School income. This contribution still leaves a gap between the actual cost per student and the tuition paid per student. The Annual Fund provides an attractive addition in that the donor gives the funds directly to the school. Since the donor receives no goods or services, donations to the Annual Fund are 100% tax deductible and many corporations will match these contributions thereby doubling your gift.

Where will the money from the Annual Fund go?
Our primary concern is making the school fiscally sound. The parish currently funds the deficit in the budget. It is the goal of the Annual Fund to help the school balance its budget. Aside from keeping tuition increases to a minimum, there are other capital improvement expenses.  Because our school is over 40 years old, improvements will be necessary sooner rather than later. Some of the money in the past has been used towards the new roof for the school and new windows.  Also, in order to maintain our reputation as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence we need to keep pace with educational advancements. This means money will be needed for new science equipment, technological improvements and teacher professional development.

Will we have an Annual Fund every year?
We certainly hope so. The Annual Fund will be a way to absorb costs while keeping tuition down. It does not mean tuition will remain unchanged . Increases in tuition are inevitable, however with the Annual Fund, it is hoped that the tuition remains affordable. A tradition of giving will help us ensure our tradition of faith, caring and excellence for generations to come.
